Enhancements
At level 70, everyone faces the same conundrum:
- You can't raid Karazhan or do Heroic instances without epic gear.
- You can't get epic gear without raiding Karazhan or doing Heroic instances.
One solution: gear enhancements. (There are others.) Simply put, enhancements transform your good blue ("Rare") gear into the equivalent of decent epics.
Note: The big 3.0.2 patch has transformed enhancements along with much else. Enhancements formerly limited to healers are now suited to casters, too, and some caster enchantments are now even appropriate for noncaster dps.
Arcana (formerly Glyphs)
Arcana (the plural of arcanum) are head enhancements (like inscriptions but for helmets) that can be purchased for 100 Gold apiece (less the appropriate reputation discount) from various faction quartermasters (not Aldor/Scryer). Prior to Patch 3.0.2, these items were called glyphs - a term now applied to a different sort of enhancement.
At Honored, you can get +20 Resistance to a specific school of magic:
Cenarion Expedition | Keepers of Time | Lower City | Sha'tar | Thrallmar |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nature Warding | Frost Warding | Shadow Warding | Arcane Warding | Fire Warding |
At Revered, you can purchase a two-stat arcanum appropriate to your class or orientation:
Cenarion Expedition | Keepers of Time | Lower City | Sha'tar | Thrallmar |
---|---|---|---|---|
Physical DPS | Tank | Hybrid | Spellcaster | Healer |
Arcanum of Ferocity
34 Attack Power 16 Hit Rating |
Arcanum of the Defender
16 Defense Rating 17 Dodge Rating |
Arcanum of the Outcast
17 Strength 16 Intellect |
Arcanum of Power
22 Spell Power 14 Hit Rating |
Arcanum of Renewal
19 Spell Power 7 Mana/5 secs |
If you are Revered with the Shattered Sun Offensive, an additional, PvP-oriented arcanum is available from Eldara Dawnrunner, the SSO quartermaster: the Arcanum of the Gladiator, which adds 18 Stamina and 20 resilience.
Again, if you have a helm you're likely to keep for more than a few weeks, and you have the necessary reputation with the appropriate faction, you should put an arcanum on your helm. If not, put a Heavy Knothide Armor Kit on there, as well.
Inscriptions
Inscriptions are shoulder enhancements (similar to enchantments or armor kits) you can buy from dedicated vendors - Inscriber Saalyn (Aldor) or Inscriber Veredis (Scryer) - in the back of the respective banks in Shattrath (not far from the righthand mailboxes). For each faction, four Inscriptions (healer, caster, tank, dps) are available at level 64 with Honored reputation; four better ones are available at level 70 and Exalted.
The Honored inscriptions cost two faction tokens each; the Exalted ones cost 8 tokens each. You get the tokens - Holy Dust (Aldor) or Arcane Runes (Scryers) - from turning in Fel Armaments (Aldor) or Arcane Tomes (Scryer).
The table below is arranged to show the original purpose of the inscriptions. Following the big patch, the Inscription of Faith and the Inscription of Discipline are now identical. Perhaps more oddly, so too are the Inscription of the Orb and the Inscription of the Blade. Mix and match as you please!
Aldor | Scryers | |||
---|---|---|---|---|

Inscription of the Knight 13 Defense Rating |

If you are Honored with the Aldor or the Scryers, you should have an appropriate inscription on your shoulders. If not, put a Heavy Knothide Armor Kit on there; you can get one from the Auction House or any high-level leatherworker.
There is one other inscription of note. At Honored reputation with the Violet Eye, you can purchase from Apprentice Darius (outside Karazhan) an Inscription of Endurance, which adds 7 Resistance to all magic schools. If you have some resistance gear, this would make an appropriate addition.
Threads and Leg Armor
There are two basic categories of leg enhancements: thread (made by tailors) and leg armor (crafted by leatherworkers). The patterns to make them are all BoP and require at least Honored reputation with the appropriate faction to purchase. The items themselves, however, are all BoE and can be bought and sold privately or through the Auction House.
Reputation Needed for Pattern | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
User | Crafter | Faction | Honored | Exalted |
Caster, Healer | Tailor | Aldor | Silver Spellthread
25 Spell Power (formerly 46 Healing) 15 Stamina |
Golden Spellthread
35 Spell Power (formerly 66 Healing) 20 Stamina |
Caster, Healer | Tailor | Scryers | Mystic Spellthread
25 Spell Power 15 Stamina |
Runic Spellthread
35 Spell Power 20 Stamina |
Other DPS | Leatherworker | Thrallmar | Cobrahide Leg Armor
40 Attack Power 10 Critical Strike Rtg |
Nethercobra Leg Armor
50 Attack Power 12 Critical Strike Rtg |
Tank | Leatherworker | Cenarion Expedition | Clefthide Leg Armor
30 Stamina 10 Agility |
Nethercleft Leg Armor
40 Stamina 12 Agility |
Prior to Patch 3.0.2, the Aldor threads were healing enhancements; the Scryer threads boosted spell damage and healing. Since the patch and the shift to a single stat, spell power, the two sets of threads are identical. Only the materials required to make them remain somewhat different.
Glyphs
Glyphs are a new type of enhancement introduced in Patch 3.0.2. (Prepatch "glyphs" are now called Arcana.) Produced by the new profession of Inscriptionist, they share some characteristics of inscriptions, gems, and even talents. Uniquely, they are applied not to specific items but to characters, each of whom can have up to three major and three minor glyphs. (The third major glyph, however, is only available at level 80; the third minor glyph is unlocked and available at level 70.)
Major glyphs produce a relatively large or significant alteration in a skill or spell (e.g., increasing the range of a Mage's Arcane Missiles, reducing the cooldown of a Warrior's Charge, or changing the duration and intensity of a Druid's Rejuvenation). Minor glyphs tend to produce a smaller, less significant effect (for instance, changing the form of a Polymorphed foe from a sheep to a penguin). Each glyph, major or minor, is unique to a specific class.
To add a glyph to your character:
- Buy an appropriate glyph from an Inscriptionist or the Auction House. (There is now a Glyphs category in the AH with subcategories for all classes.)
- Ask a guard in any Horde city (not Shattrath) for the location of the nearest Lexicon of Power. (It's the last entry in the list.) There will be one near one of the new Inscriptionist trainers.
- In Orgrimmar, the Lexicon of Power is on the upper level of the Drag, past the cooking trainer, in a room [56,46] with a very small door.
- In Thunder Bluff, it's in the Pools of Vision - the cave beneath Spirit Rise - to the right [28,20] as you walk in the entrance.
- In the Undercity, it's on the lower level across from the main entrance to the Apothecarium (on the inner bank of the sewer) [61,59].
- In Silvermoon City, it's just east [69,23] of Sunfury Spire.
- Go to the Lexicon of Power (a glowing gizmo floating in the air). You must be within a few feet.
- Click your spellbook icon. At the bottom of the window that pops up, click the tab marked "Glyphs."
- Open your backpack or bag and right-click your chosen glyph.
- Move your now-glowing cursor over to the Glyphs page, onto one of the empty circles now pulsing, and click again. The effects of that glyph have now been added to your character.
- If you ever change your mind and want to replace that glyph, you can do so - much the way you would a gem, armor kit, or enchantment - simply by repeating the above steps and installing the new glyph atop the old one.
