Wrath of the Lich King
Starting in Howling Fjord
A Guide to the Starting Area of Vengeance Landing
Wrath of the Lich King is out. If you have installed it on your computer, you have two main choices:
- Create a Death Knight.
- Take one or more of your existing high-level (68+) characters to the new continent of Northrend, and hit the road to level 80.
If you want to make a Death Knight, there's a reasonable introduction on Wowhead.
If you want to take an existing character to Northrend, you must choose between two different starting areas:
- Vengeance Landing in the zone of Howling Fjord (accessed from outside the Undercity)
- Warsong Hold in the zone of Borean Tundra (accessed from outside Orgrimmar).
- If you intend to quest with friends or guildmates, make sure you go to the same zone! The starting zones are not adjacent, and there is no direct connnection between them.
- Contrary to the incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated information on many sites, there is a full complement of trainers and quests in both locations. (The leather and skinning trainers in Borean Tundra are a healthy distance from Warsong Hold, though.)
The Guide
Getting to Howling Fjord
Leaving the Undercity
Exit the Undercity from the main entrance up on ground level. Slightly to the left of the old zeppelin tower (to Orgrimmar or Grom'gol) is a new one. Go there, up the stairs, and onto the waiting platform. When the zeppelin arrives, get on it. Next stop: Vengeance Landing!
Arriving in Vengeance Landing
The town of Vengeance Landing faces slightly south of west, toward a questing area and, beyond, Vengeance Lift, which provides access to the rest of the zone. There are four buildings arranged in a rough semicircle around the east side of town.
- You come in on the top of the zeppelin tower [77,28], the tallest building in town. It's an Escheresque structure full of confusing, zigzagging ramps leading down to the ground.
- The large, busy building to the east is the Apothecary's building [78,28].
- The small building [79,29] southeast of the Apothecary's and north of the Inn belongs to the Inscriptionist.
- The Inn [79,30] is the big building south of the Inscriptionist's.
Vengeance Landing
The Leather Tent [78,28]
Tucked between the zep tower and the Apothecary's building is a small, open tent or pavillion sheltering two trainers:
- Roberta Jacks, Grand Master Skinning Trainer,
- Gunter Hansen, Grand Master Leatherworking Trainer.
The Apothecary's Building [78,28]
In front of the door is a single quest-giver:
Inside are five people in a semicircle arranged around a large contraption in the center of the room:
- Jessica Evans, Reagents and Poisons vendor,
- Marjory Kains, Grand Master Herbalism Trainer,
- Apothecary Celestine,
- Emil Autumn, Grand Master Enchanting Trainer,
- Wilhelmina Renel, Grand Master Alchemy Trainer.
The Forge [79,28]
Outside, just north of the Inscriptionist's, are a forge, anvil, and a cluster of people:
- Jonathan Lewis, Grand Master Mining Trainer,
- Alexis Walker, Armorsmith, who buys, sells, and repairs,
- Kristen Smythe, Grand Master Blacksmithing Trainer,
- Carter Tiffens, Grand Master Jewelcrafting Trainer.
The Inscriptionist's Building [79,29]
Inside the small building are only two people:
- Booker Kells, Grand Master Inscription Trainer (downstairs),
- A Lexicon of Power,
- Sally Tompkins, Grand Master First Aid Trainer (upstairs).
The Flight Point [79,29]
The flight point, between the Inscriptionist's and the Inn, is obvious and accessible:
- Bat Handler Adeline, the flight master,
- Bat Handler Camille, a quest assistant.
The Inn [79,30]
Inside:
- Barnabas Frye, Trade Goods vendor (in back, at the foot of the lefthand stairs),
- Patrick Hall, General Goods vendor (ditto),
- Alexandra McQueen, Grand Master Tailoring Trainer (opposite them, at the foot of the righthand stairs),
- Timothy Holland, Innkeeper (in a room at the bottom of the central stairs),
- Sebastian Crane, Horde Expedition Quartermaster (in a room upstairs).
Outside:
- Robert Clarke, Stable Master [79,30] (just around the corner to the right of the door)
- Pontius, a quest-giver (further around the inn, on the south side)
The Center of Town (around [78,30])
Near the cooking table [78,29], just south of the Apothecary's:
- Thomas Kolichio, Grand Master Cooking Trainer and quest-giver,
- Brock Olson, Butcher (a meat vendor).
Southwest and below the cooks:
- Jamesina Watterly [78,30], Grand Master Engineering Trainer.
Southwest of the Inn, near the south wall of the village:
- High Executor Anselm [78,31], a quest-giver.
The Pier [79,27]
On the north end of the pier just northeast of town is Angelina Soren, Grand Master Fishing Trainer.
South of the Village
- Deathstalker Razael [77,34] is roughly in the center of the northern edge of the battlefield south of the village.
- Dark Ranger Lyana [79,36 or 78,37] is south of Razael and sometimes a bit east.
- Captain Harker [84,36] is at the stern of the ship Windrunner, well south of the village and a short distance offshore from the Derelict Strand.
- Apothecary Hanes [83,43] spawns (sometimes) on the eastern edge of the Derelict Strand, near Lieutenant Celeyne's spawn point - but only if Celeyne is dead.
Quests
There are questing areas on three sides of town.
- North of town along the coast is a small questing and fishing area containing lots of unaggressive crabs (giant tidecrawlers) and a cave.
- Roughly west is a second questing area full of corpses, crows, and wargs.
- The large questing area south of town includes a battlefield, a fortified camp beyond, and a number of ships.
General quest information:
- All quests in the starting area are level 71.
- All quests in the starting area seem to require a minimum character level of 68.
- Many of the quests yield reputation with The Hand of Vengeance, a subfaction of the Horde Expedition, but so far this is of limited utility except for the portion (reportedly half) that increases your reputation with the Horde Expedition.
The Cooking Quest
- Northern Cooking
Collection quest from Thomas Kolichio [78,29], Grand Master Cooking Trainer (in the center of town), to get four pieces of Chilled Meat from any of the beasts in Northrend.
Rewards: 75 reputation with The Hand of Vengeance, 6250 experience, 2g20s, recipe for Northern Stew.- Cooking skill of 350 or higher is required.
- This is identical to the cooking quest in Warsong Hold, but they are not the same quest. You can't get the quest in one zone and turn it in elsewhere; nor can you do both.
- You do not need to have the quest to collect Chilled Meat, but the drop rate is low in any case.
- This appears to be a stand-alone quest; there is no follow-up.
- Do this quest along with War Is Hell, Let Them Eat Crow, or Spiking the Mix.
The Plaguehound Questline
Starts with Pontius [79,31], just south of the Inn (around the side).
- Let Them Eat Crow
Basically a collection quest for five pieces of crow meat.- Get the meat by killing five crows west of town. (For a change, the drop rate seems to be 100%.)
- Before or after killing the crows, summon your plaguehound by right-clicking the provided Plaguehound Cage.
- While in the quest area, use (right-click) the meat to feed your plaguehound(s).
- Do this quest along with War Is Hell and, if you qualify, Northern Cooking.
- Your plaguehound acts like a temporary combat pet (and displaces your usual pet if you are a Hunter or Warlock).
- Credit is shared with others in the group. A total of five pieces of meat is required - not five pieces per player.
- Sniff Out the Enemy
Basically an easy escort quest from the kennels to a cave north of town.- Use the provided Plaguehound Leash near Pontius and the dog cages.
- Follow the dog north, out of town and along the shore, to a cave [75,19].
- Kill the two inhabitants, if they are there.
- Complete the quest by picking up the Dragonskin Scroll.
- Do this quest along with Spiking the Mix.
